ANNAPOLIS, Md. (WJZ) — Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan and state health officials announced the state’s plan to roll out COVID-19 vaccinations as early as Dec. 14.
Deputy Health Secretary Dr. Jinlene Chan answered questions about what Marylanders should expect once they take the vaccine. She said they only know what has been reported from the vaccination trials.
“Pfizer enrolled over 40,000 people, which is quite a large vaccination trial, and Moderna enrolled about 30,000 individuals with some significant efforts to ensure diversity and the people that were enrolled, both in terms of age, race, and ethnicity,” Chan said.
She said according to the data released by FDA on Pfizer’s vaccine, there have been some side effects people experienced primarily in the first one or two days after getting the shot. But it’s what you might expect, including pain at the site of injection, as well as mild fever, headache, muscle aches and joint aches.
“This shows, actually, that the vaccine is working, that the body’s immune system was responding to the vaccine, to be able to produce those protective antibodies that would ultimately protect that individual against getting the disease itself,” Chan said.
She said independent groups are monitoring the data from the vaccine trials from both Pfizer and Moderna. Those groups did not flag any safety concerns through the course of the trials to date, Chan said.
She said early information shows mild to moderate impacts for about 10% to 15% of the people who took the vaccine.
Chan also addressed if the vaccine would be safe for children.
“Right now the vaccine trials have only enrolled adults,” Chan said. “And so it is anticipated that any approval or recommendations from the CDC will only be for adults at this time.”
But she said the clinical trials have already started to enroll children as young as 12. They will then enroll even younger children.
“So we anticipate that the results from future trials will provide us more insight on the efficacy and safety in children,” Chan said.
According to Gov. Hogan, there will only be 155,000 doses of the vaccine with the possibility of perhaps 300,000 by year’s end.
The vaccine could be available as early as Dec. 14, officials said.
Healthcare workers, first responders and long-term care residents and staff will be the first to get the vaccine in the state.

Lord Pretty Flacko and Bad Gal RiRi are rumored to be in a relationship.
On Monday (Nov. 30),Page Sixreported that Rihanna and A$AP Rocky were seen having dinner with friends at the Beatrice Inn in New York City over the holiday weekend, further confirming the rumors they are dating.
Rumors of their relationship started after Rih split from her billionaire boyfriend, Hassan Jameel, in January. Since then, the pair have been spotted hanging out together on multiple occasions.
Back in August, fans noticed their flirtation during a video interview for GQ featuring the two artists. RiRi asked Rocky questions about skincare to help promote her own Fenty skincare line. He also shared his first red carpet look, last purchase under $20, a food he would never eat and more.
“What is your skin type?” Rihanna asked Rocky.
“Handsome,” he replied, to which Rihanna rolled her eyes.
“My skin type is just as complicated as men are,” Rihanna jokingly said when A$AP Rocky asked about her skin type for Vogue. “Y’all always try to say women are complicated [but] it’s y’all!.”
These video interviews were cute moments between the two friends-reportedly turned-lovers and left fans wondering what a relationship between them would look like.
An Italian man walked 450 kilometres for a week after having an argument with his wife. He was fined €400 (Rs 35,700) for breaching the lockdown rules.
An Italian man, who was frustrated by an argument with his wife, stepped outside his house to calm down himself and ended up walking 450 kilometres. Italians have nicknamed the unnamed 48-year-old “Forrest Gump” on social media, after the hero of a 1994 movie of the same name who ran thousands of miles across the United States.
The man who lives in Como, in the far north of Italy on the Swiss border, managed to walk all the way to Fano, a small town on the Adriatic coast, about 450 kilometres (280 miles) south.
The Italian police stopped his epic walk at 2 am in Fano for breaching lockdown rules and fined him €400 (Rs 35,700), a week after he left his home in the north. They could not believe that he could have walked so far. However, when they checked his ID, they found out that his wife had reported him as missing a week ago.
“I came here on foot, I didn’t use any transport,” he told the police, local media reported. He said, “Along the way, I met people who offered me food and drink”. “I’m OK, just a bit tired,” he said, having walked around 60 kilometres daily.
He admitted that he did not realise how far he had gone during his long walk to cool off his mind.
The man’s wife travelled to Fano to pick him up. The reports did not mention how the wife reacted after learning that he was fined €400.
Netizens said that man was heroic and criticised the fine. One user said that he should have been rewarded with a pair of shoes instead of being fined. Another user praised him for walking off to cool his anger instead of resorting to violence.
Italy has imposed a nationwide curfew from 10 pm to 5 am in an effort to curb the second wave of coronavirus infections in the country.
Dec. 4 (UPI) — A dog that went missing from her owner’s Alabama back yard turned up three weeks later when the canine wandered into a Walmart store and found her owner working at a checkout lane.
Danielle Robinette, a customer service associate at the Walmart store in Dothan, said she was baffled when a black-and-white dog wandered into the store.
“I was like, ‘What in the world is happening?'” Robinette told The Washington Post. “I’m a huge animal lover, so I just followed her, and she ran up to register No. 6.”
The cashier at register No. 6, June Rountree, was able to solve the mystery — the canine was her missing dog, Abby.
Rountree said Abby had vanished from her back yard three weeks earlier, leaving her collar behind. She said she and her husband had been searching for the dog, but were unable to find any sign of their missing pet.
“I called her name and she came to me,” Rountree said of the reunion at Walmart. “I bent over and hugged her. I completely lost it then. I couldn’t speak. I was in complete shock and just couldn’t believe it.”
Rountree said the Walmart store is more than a mile from her home. She said she has worked at the location for 10 years, but never brought 4-year-old Abby inside. She said the canine might have recognized the store from times when she would bring the dog to the store’s parking lot and the woods behind the business.
“Never in a million years did I think she would show up at Walmart,” Roundtee said.
Robinette said she was equally shocked by the outcome.
“It was beautiful,” Robinette told the Dothan Eagle. “It was so very overwhelming. I was in disbelief. I thought she was joking.”
Singapore’s approval of chicken cells grown in bioreactors is seen as landmark moment across industry.

Cultured meat, produced in bioreactors without the slaughter of an animal, has been approved for sale by a regulatory authority for the first time. The development has been hailed as a landmark moment across the meat industry.
The “chicken bites”, produced by the US company Eat Just, have passed a safety review by the Singapore Food Agency and the approval could open the door to a future when all meat is produced without the killing of livestock, the company said.
Dozens of firms are developing cultivated chicken, beef and pork, with a view to slashing the impact of industrial livestock production on the climate and nature crises, as well as providing cleaner, drug-free and cruelty-free meat. Currently, about 130 million chickens are slaughtered every day for meat, and 4 million pigs. By weight, 60% of the mammals on earth are livestock, 36% are humans and only 4% are wild.
The cells for Eat Just’s product are grown in a 1,200-litre bioreactor and then combined with plant-based ingredients. Initial availability would be limited, the company said, and the bites would be sold in a restaurant in Singapore. The product would be significantly more expensive than conventional chicken until production was scaled up, but Eat Just said it would ultimately be cheaper.Advertisement
The cells used to start the process came from a cell bank and did not require the slaughter of a chicken because cells can be taken from biopsies of live animals. The nutrients supplied to the growing cells were all from plants.
The growth medium for the Singapore production line includes foetal bovine serum, which is extracted from foetal blood, but this is largely removed before consumption. A plant-based serum would be used in the next production line, the company said, but was not available when the Singapore approval process began two years ago.
The companies developing lab-grown meat believe this is the product most likely to wean committed meat-eaters off traditional sources. Vegan diets are viewed as unappealing by some, and plant-based meat replacements are not always regarded as replicating the texture and flavour of conventional meat. Meat cultivated in bioreactors also avoids the issues of bacterial contamination from animal waste and the overuse of antibiotics and hormones in animals.
The small scale of current cultured meat production requires a relatively high use of energy and therefore carbon emissions. But once scaled up its manufacturers say it will produce much lower emissions and use far less water and land than conventional meat.
Josh Tetrick, of Eat Just, said: “I think the approval is one of the most significant milestones in the food industry in the last handful of decades. It’s an open door and it’s up to us and other companies to take that opportunity. My hope is this leads to a world in the next handful of years where the majority of meat doesn’t require killing a single animal or tearing down a single tree.”
But he said major challenges remained, with the reaction of consumers to cultured meat perhaps being the most significant: “Is it different? For sure. Our hope is through transparent communication with consumers, what this is and how it compares to conventional meat, we’re able to win. But it’s not a guarantee.” He said the cultured chicken was nutritionally the same as conventional meat.
Other challenges included getting regulatory approval in other nations and increasing production. “If we want to serve the entire country of Singapore, and eventually bring it to elsewhere in the world, we need to move to 10,000-litre or 50,000-litre-plus bioreactors,” Tetrick said.
Eat Just already has experience in selling non-animal products, such as its plant-based egg and vegan mayonnaise, to consumers. Another company, Supermeat.com in Israel, has just begun free public tastings involving a “crispy cultured chicken”.
Industry experts said other companies, including Memphis Meats, Mosa Meat and Aleph Farms, might do well in future as they were working on textured products such as steaks and were able to produce significant amounts of lab-grown meat from the start. Tyson and Cargill, two of the world’s biggest conventional meat companies, now have a stake in Memphis Meats.
A recent report form the global consultancy AT Kearney predicted that most meat in 2040 would not come from dead animals. The firm’s Carsten Gerhardt said: “Approval in an innovation hotspot like Singapore already in 2020 could fast-forward market entry in other developed nations. In the long run we are convinced that cultured meat will address the health and environmental impact issues that traditional meat has when produced in a highly industrialised way.”
Gerhardt said he expected cultured meat would replace cuts of traditional meat, but that plant-based products, which were less expensive, were more likely to replace burgers and sausages.
“The [Eat Just approval] is a very big deal for the future of meat production globally,” said Bruce Friedrich, at the non-profit Good Food Institute in the US. “A new space race for the future of food is under way.” He said cultivated meat was unlikely to become mainstream for some years, until it matched the cost of conventional meat.
Hsin Huang, the secretary general of the International Meat Secretariat, which represents the global meat and livestock industry, agreed the cultured meat approval was a significant moment.
“It seems certain that similar products from other companies will follow,” he said. “There has been so much hype on cell-cultured meat that the anticipated first steps to mass sales is a significant moment.”
“We believe the market potential for cultured meat is vast, as consumers in general continue to show great enthusiasm for the taste and nutritional benefits of animal products. Of course, our view is that real animal products will better meet these needs, but healthy competition is welcome.”
He added that livestock are currently essential to the livelihoods of an estimated one billion poor people globally. He said the IMS believed strongly in consumer choice, with appropriate labelling and regulation.
